potc007: Demeaning Requirement for the Unemployed.
I have been working since I was 15 years old, and been on my own since I was 17. I now have two degrees including a Master's, which I paid for myself. As part of my State's requirements / recommendations for the unemployed, I'm now asked to "prove" I can do basic math, reading and demonstrate I can find a file in the file room through Keytrain. It is demeaning to anyone who has done as much as I have. This program has benefits for some I'm sure and been marketed well, but at the expense of people in an already difficult situation. No I would not recommend it, and I plan to fight my State's move in the direction to require it.
The public school where my daughter goes is FORCING her to take this test. An Honor student, already accepted at a University, with no need at all to take the test. In addition, not everyone has to, but she does because she took Culinary (considered "technical") for a full year. This test is just a skills assessment test. They go on and on about it, (special certificate!) but its pure BS.
They use the term "workforce" often, describing the public that has to work for the government as the Workforce, like we are slaves in labor. This whole forcing people to take this test is just plain old creepy. Like any employers give a rats a** about this stuff. HIGHLY OFFENSIVE TEST that smells like something else is really going on.
Also ACT Inc, is a private business and marketing firm that is being sued in a class action suit (as of 11/2013) for selling high school students names (including social security #'s, phone and addresses) to other marketing firms and god knows who else.
